Q: Who or what inspired you to pursue a career in EEMS?
A: I am from Park Forest, IL, and growing up, I would always visit the Shedd Aquarium. They had a program for high school students called the High School Marine Biology Program. I took some introductory courses at the Shedd and then traveled to the Bahamas, where I conducted a research study and learned how to snorkel. After returning, I knew that I wanted to obtain a degree in marine science.
Q: What is your dream job?
A: My dream job would be to work in a sea turtle hospital!
Q: What are your favorite things to do in your free time?
A: Walk and hang out with my two dogs, Spud and Lilikoi! My mom, my sister, and I also participate in a book club where we read books by women of color centered around women of color. I also enjoy reality TV.
Q: Who are some Black gender minorities who you look up to (in EEMS & beyond) and why?
A: Mae Jemison. Growing up, I thought that I wanted to be an astronaut. I mailed a letter to her when I was 12 and she wrote me back!
Q: What advice would you give young Black gender minorities interested in EEMS?
A: Find a support system early on and prioritize your mental health and well-being.
