Meet Dr. Cam Mosley (they/them) our Programs Co-Chair!

Cam is an NSF Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Minnesota studying fisheries ecology. In their role as Programs Co-Chair, Cam helps curate an engaging and impactful conference program. Cam is excited to learn about the research of BWEEMS members and build connections through their work combining research sessions, selecting keynotes, and scheduling excursions. They are grateful for the community, friendship, and support they’ve found through BWEEMS and look forward to growing that network at BWEEMS 2025!

Q: How do your identities shape your approach to your work and involvement in the scientific community? What does being a Black gender minority in EEMS mean to you?

A: My identities as a Black non-binary scientist have provided me with a unique perspective on my work and drives me to push for open science and community science to uplift diverse voices and not limit access to my work.

Q: How do you balance being a scientist with the rest of your life?

A: I balance being a scientist with the rest of my life by exploring my hobbies like camping and traveling, in addition to spending time with my family.

Q: What art are you most excited about and want to share with the BWEEMS community?

A: The book Been Outside: Adventures of Black Women, Nonbinary, and Gender Nonconforming People in Nature.

Q: What advice would you give young Black gender minorities interested in EEMS?

A: Be proud of who you are and bring all your identities to the table as a scientist. Don’t worry about what others think and know you belong in the EEMS fields.

Q: What’s your favorite place in nature and why?

A: My favorite place in nature is anywhere on the water. Be it a lake or the ocean shoreline, being near water makes me feel centered and reminds of how things are all connected.

Q: Who or what inspired you to pursue a career in EEMS?

A: I was inspired to pursue a career in EEMS by my passion for the environment and connection to nature growing up on the Gulf Coast.

Q: Share your favorite BWEEMS memory!

A: My favorite memory is the final night of the first BWEEMS conference when all the members danced together and sang songs from the culture on the dancefloor. It was great seeing friends old and new and relaxing in a space where we didn’t have to make ourselves smaller or constantly code-switch.
